Following the break up of his parents' marriage, young white boy Johnny (Bobby Driscoll) is sent to live on his grandmother's plantation. Lonely and unhappy, Johnny finds solace in the form of former slave Uncle Remus (James Baskett), who entertains the boy with his tales of Brer Rabbit and Brer Bear. Disney's family tale - regarded as controversial on its initial release - is a mix of live action and classic animation.
